The purpose of the Finance Commission is to assist advise and council the
Pastor on matters of fiscal and financial administration including planning,
management, administration, stewardship, fundraising, and the safeguarding and
investing of parish assets and funds.
The Finance Commission is required by Canon Law and is appointed by the Pastor.
The Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Pastor to make
recommendations, resolutions and proposals regarding parish policies and
procedures relating to financial matters. The Commission may also be asked to
give specific advice to the Pastor regarding the administration of the parish,
personnel matters and staffing considerations.
The Finance Commission engages in dialogue with other advisory groups within
the Parish particularly Parish Council, regarding budget and other financial
matters. The Commission seeks to prepare and execute a financial plan with is
faithful to the mission, goals and objectives of the Parish established by
Parish Council.
Due to the nature of the Commission’s purpose and work, members ought to have
skill and experience in at least some of the following areas: money management,
budgeting, banking, data processing, planning, supervision and administration,
fiscal management. Members are expected to be able to handle confidential and
classified information.
Specific responsibilities of the Commission include:

Assisting the Pastor in the preparation of the annual budget by ways of setting parameters, reviewing proposals and making final recommendations for approval.

Monitoring receipts and disbursements on a periodic basis, making recommendations about remedial actions, if necessary

Preparing short term and long range financial projections and goals

Recommending policies and procedures regarding proper stewardship

Dialoging with the Building and Grounds Commission regarding the financial implications for all maintenance, repairs and construction needs.

Assisting in the preparation of reports to the Parish and the Diocese

Conducting all fund raising and stewardship efforts including the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and parish appeals

Giving Advice to the Pastor about matters of finance and administration

Undertaking special projects as requested by the Pastor.
