About Children's Liturgy of the Word

Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is a wonderful way to assist our children in focusing on the Sunday Liturgy.  It is available to any child that is old enough not to need adult supervision (ideally those from 4 years to 4th grade).  It is an opportunity for the child to hear the same readings as the adults, but on a level they can better understand and appreciate.

Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered during most 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Masses.  The children enter church with their parents as they normally would.  However, after the Introductory Rite, the priest invites them to come up toward the front of the church.  They are then led down the center isle by one of the members of the ministry to one of the classrooms.

As they enter the classroom, the celebrants for that week greet the children.  The children take their places on the carpet, and after they settle in, the children hear the readings and listen to the Gospel reflection read by the Children's Liturgy teachers.

The teacher then presents the Reflection in a variety of formats that can vary depending on the readings for that week.  The children are encouraged to share in an open forum geared to help them express feelings and questions about the Word.  In this setting they often show insights that are remarkable and carry home a closer relationship with Jesus.

When the priest has completed his homily in the church, the classroom instructors are notified and the children are lined up and returned to their parents in the pews.  The children are also given a fun worksheet that further enforces the theme of the Gospel reading that they just heard.

Children's Liturgy of the Word is an effective way for our children to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and help them achieve a fuller and more active participation in the worship of the Church.
