"When a husband and wife are united in marriage, they no longer seem like something earthly, but rather like the image of God Himself."
- St. John Chrysostom
About Marriage
The Council of Trent explains it this way: "The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ loved his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life."

The Catechism of the Catholic Church Teaching on Marriage
The Nature of Marriage
Marriage is a covenant by which a man and a woman establish a partnership for life, ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children (CCC 1601).
It reflects the union of Christ and His Church (CCC 1617).
The Origin and Dignity of Marriage
Instituted by God from creation and raised by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament (CCC 1603, 1613).
The Essential Properties of Marriage
Unity: One man and one woman in faithful love (CCC 1644).
Indissolubility: Marriage is lifelong; what God has joined, no one can separate (CCC 1646).
Openness to Life: Married love is naturally ordered toward children (CCC 1652).
The Ministers and Rite
The spouses themselves are the ministers of the sacrament; the priest or deacon is the official witness for the Church (CCC 1623).
Essential consent: Each freely gives consent to the marriage (CCC 1626–1627).
The Effects of the Sacrament of Marriage
Gives spouses grace to love each other with Christ’s love (CCC 1641–1642).
Strengthens them to live out fidelity and family life in holiness (CCC 1641).
Preparation and Celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage
The Church requires proper preparation for the Sacrament of Marriage (CCC 1622).
Pastoral Letter
Dear Friends,
Congratulations on your engagement! It is a privilege to assist you as you prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage at Seton Parish.
The Catholic Church esteems marriage as very sacred. Sacred Scripture compares marriage to the covenant of God with us. Saint Paul says, “the union of husband and wife is a sign of the union of Christ and the Church.”
The Seton Parish community wants to support you as you grow together in God’s love. We undertake this ministry with you now as you begin preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage.
Your wedding will be a beautiful, faith filled, and memorable occasion. This document will provide helpful information about the wedding preparation process and for planning your wedding liturgy.
We look forward to walking with you on this faith journey together.
Please contact the parish office at hello@setonparish.com to begin your wedding planning!
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Leo Connolly, Pastor
